Our main event is the annual Burns Supper which is held to celebrate the life and work of Robert Burns who is widely regarded as Scotland’s national poet. It is traditionally held on the nearest Saturday to the poet’s birthday on 25th January. Burns, a proto-romantic poet, greatly influenced later romantic poets such as William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Burns was an internationalist who followed events in America and in Europe. He was inspired by Thomas Paine’s The Rights of Man and and supported the ideals of the French Revolution even if he became disillusioned by the outcome.
Here is the final verse of one of his most famous poems,
A Man’s A Man for A’ That, first in Scots and then in standard English.
A Man’s A Man For A’ That
by Robert Burns
Then let us pray that come it may
(As come it will for a’ that),
That Sense and Worth o’er a’ the earth,
Shall bear the gree an a’ that.
For a’ that, an a’ that,
It’s coming yet for a’ that,
That man to man, the world, o’er,
Shall brithers be for a’ that.
Standard English
Then let us pray that come it may
(As come it will for all that),
That Sense and Worth over all the earth,
Shall come out top and all that.
For all that, and all that,
It’s coming yet for all that,
That man to man the world, over
Shall brothers be for all that.
We frequently hold Whisky Tastings where guests have the opportunity to sample and compare quality Scotch malt whiskies under the guidance of our resident experts. These are by no means solemn events and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
In 2017 we had a tasting of Swedish whiskies under the expert guidance of Hasse Nilsson, who was then Brand Manager at Box Destilleri AB.
We also hold regular Film Nights where we show films that have a connection to Scotland. We begin and end the evening with a glass or two of wine or soft drinks.
Films that we have shown include the Maggie, a comedy about a small steam boat that has seen better days, Whisky Galore a comedy about 50,000 cases of whisky in a ship that runs aground on the Scottish island of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides and The Thirty Nine Steps a thriller based on the novel by John Buchan.
We have held an Author’s Evening when the author, Jöns Hellsing, talked about his very interesting family and his very entertaining book Händig man sökes which is set in Scotland.
Our most popular events with younger members were perhaps the Halloween parties that were held annually in Petruskyrkan in Danderyd. We haven’t held a Halloween party for many years but have plans to do so in autumn 2024.
We also plan to hold a Ceilidh, a social event for all the family, with Scottish folk music and singing, traditional dancing, and storytelling. in spring 2024. Our intention is to run the event in conjunction with other clubs and societies that have a celtic connection.
These future plans are still at an early planning stage and are subject to interest from members and the state of our economy.
